The Bedford-Stuyvesant Family Health Center (BSFHC) is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that serves all of the primary health care needs of families in the heart of North and Central Brooklyn. Our mission is to provide the most professional, courteous and highest quality health care, with dignity, to those we serve, especially the undeserved population, without regard for ability to pay. In addition to operating the Health Centers, we operate in School-Based Health Centers to increase the accessibility and availability of quality primary and preventive physical and mental health care to pre-school, elementary, middle and secondary school students in high-risk areas of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a Medical Assistant to join our team. The Medical Assistant facilitate the smooth flow of patients to ensure minimum waiting time and provide clinical services and process patients within the scope of practice.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitor patient arrival and assist with patient flow and ensure that patients and visitors are greeted promptly and courteously.
- Escort patient to exam room, monitor patient wait times, assist patient in preparing for exam and advises physician when patient is ready. Assist during examination if required or requested.
- Obtain and record patient’s chief complaints and information, data and record histories, vital signs, venipuncture, allergies, specimen collection, temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration, and documents results in the patients chart within the scope of practice
- Perform, prep and assist as needed with clinical, vision and hearing screenings and technical services such as EKG, phlebotomy, as assigned
- Prepare medical records and takes heights, weights, vital signs, and records
- Ascertain that lab and other reports are on records before each patient's appointment.
- Prepare patients in the rooms for examination by the provider.
- Work closely with the provider in the examination of a patient, especially during an obstetrical and gynecological examination.
- Responsible for effectively and efficiently providing patient procedures (medications, injections and call in prescriptions) as prescribed by the provider
- Provide HIV/Antibody counseling in accordance with established protocols and in compliance with State and Federal requirements
- Generate follow-up appointments upon patient discharge and prints visit summary at checkout prior to their departure from service site
- Provide interpretation services and clerical support necessary for efficient and effective functioning of the office
- Ensure that the patient referrals are completed and forwarded appropriately
- Adhere to universal precautions and OSHA Regulations
- Maintain examination rooms and medical areas in a clean and orderly fashion
- Confirm patient appointments two (2) days prior via E-Messenger and contact patients again via phone one (1) day prior of visit
- Attend meetings, conferences and seminars, and be available for In-Service Education at all times
- Stock examination room with supplies and check supplies from vendors against packing slips as assigned
- Update pertinent patient information, including medical insurance coverage and eligibility in the appropriate EMR system
- Retrieves and files medical reports/lab results
- Knowledge of HIPPA rules in maintaining and ensuring patients/clients health information confidential
Education/Experience Required:
- MA Education
- Medical Assistant Certification
- Certification as a Medical Assistant (CCMA) preferred
- Two (2) years relevant work experience preferred.
Other Related Skills/Experience and requirements:
- Must be flexible with scheduling and rotating weekends
- Maintain HIPPA patient/employee confidentiality
- Knowledge of EMR systems and Bilingual Spanish ability a plus.
- Excellent interpersonal skills must demonstrate professionalism, courteous and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, team members, families and significant others
- Display courtesy, tact and patience with all members of the team members and extended community
- Ensure that all patients and visitors receive personalized prompt attention and are treated with receptiveness, dignity and respect
- Provide instructions to the patient upon discharge as per instructed by the providers
Hourly rate: Upto $17
